1. Population:

2. Time Zone:

  • Rwanda operates on Central Africa Time (CAT), which is UTC+2.

3. Language:

  • Official Languages: Kinyarwanda, French, and English are official languages.
  • Widely Spoken: Swahili is also widely spoken and understood, particularly in business contexts.

4. Climate and Best Time to Visit:

  • Climate: Rwanda has a temperate tropical highland climate, with lower temperatures than typical equatorial countries due to its high elevation.
  • Best Time to Visit: The drier months from June to September and December to February are ideal for gorilla trekking and other outdoor activities.
  • Rainy Season: Even in the rainy season, there are dry periods throughout the day or even multiple consecutive days, often with sunshine.
  • Clothing Recommendations: Lightweight, breathable clothing is suitable for daytime, while warmer layers are recommended for cooler evenings and higher altitudes. A waterproof jacket and an umbrella are advisable during the rainy season.

5. Immigration Rules and Visas:

  • Visa-Free Entry: Many countries enjoy visa-free entry to Rwanda. For a detailed list of visa-exempt countries, please refer to the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration’s official communiqué.
  • Visa on Arrival: As of January 1, 2018, nationals of all countries can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport and all land borders.
  • Visa Fees: The standard visa fee is USD 50 for a single entry and USD 70 for multiple entries. Payment can be made by credit/debit card or cash.
  • Passport Validity: Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry and have sufficient blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

6. Vaccinations and Health Precautions:

  • Yellow Fever: A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic.
  • Routine Vaccinations: Ensure routine vaccinations are up-to-date, including measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis.
  • Malaria: Malaria is present in Rwanda. Travelers should take prescription antimalarial medications and adopt mosquito bite prevention measures.

7. Safety and Security:

  • General Safety: Rwanda is considered safe for travelers. However, it’s advisable to exercise normal precautions, especially in crowded areas.

  • Plug Types: The standard plug types are Type C/F (Europe) and Type G (UK). Many establishments are equipped with multiple sockets accommodating the above mentioned plug types, but it’s advisable to carry appropriate adapters.

11. Currency and Exchange Rates:

  • Official Currency: The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the official currency.
  • Exchange Rates: For the most current exchange rates, please refer to the National Bank of Rwanda’s official website.
  • Credit & Debit Cards: Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in urban areas. Few establishments accept American Express (AMEX) and Diners Club cards. It’s advisable to carry some cash, especially when traveling to rural areas.

12. Access to ATMs and Banks:

  • ATMs: Most banks’ ATMs accept Visa and MasterCard, providing convenient access to cash in urban centers.
  • Banking Hours: Banks typically operate from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with some branches open on Saturday mornings.
  • Tips: Queues in banks are often long, so it’s best to bring some liquid cash and exchange it at a bureau de change, where rates are generally more favorable. Remember to bring your passport for identification during currency exchange.

13. Mobile Networks and SIM Cards:

  • Cell Networks: Major mobile network providers in Rwanda include MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda.
  • SIM Cards: Travelers can purchase SIM cards at the airport, authorized shops, or service centers. Registration requires a passport, and the process is typically quick and straightforward.

14. Driving in Rwanda:

  • Driving Side: Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Licensing: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for visitors intending to drive.
  • Road Conditions: Major roads are generally in good condition. However, some less frequented roads, especially in rural areas, may require an SUV or 4×4 vehicle, particularly during the rainy season.

15. Drone Usage:

A permit is required to fly a drone recreationally or commercially in Rwanda.

Permits are issued by the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (https://www.caa.gov.rw/unmanned-aircraft), with an average processing time of 2 to 4 weeks (RPAS Activity Permit) or 2 months (RPAS Operator Certificate).

Foreign citizens are unable to register drones themselves – a Rwandan citizen, permanent resident or body / entity may register a drone on behalf of a foreign citizen.

Drones must be marked with a registration number assigned by the RCAA.

Basic rules:

  • Do not fly your drone over people or large crowds
  • Respect others privacy when flying your drone
  • Do not fly your drone over airports or in areas where aircraft are operating
  • You must fly during daylight hours and only fly in good weather conditions
  • Do not fly your drone in sensitive areas including government or military facilities. Use of drones or camera drones in these areas are prohibited
